M3U & M3U8 player

M3U player for iPhone: open M3U and M3U8 playlist links

To play an M3U or M3U8 playlist on iPhone, you need an IPTV player that accepts a playlist link. In Smart IPTV Pro Player, choose M3U as the connection type, paste your playlist URL and tap Add Playlist. The app loads the channels, groups and logos and sorts them into Live TV, Movies and Series. It works with playlist links (URLs); importing an .m3u file from the Files app is not supported.

Live TV channels from an M3U playlist in Smart IPTV Pro Player on iPhone

An M3U playlist is the most common way IPTV providers deliver channels. Smart IPTV Pro Player is an M3U player built for iPhone: you paste one link, and your live channels, movies and series appear in a native interface with search, favorites and a full-screen player.

What is an M3U playlist?

M3U is a plain-text playlist format. An IPTV M3U playlist starts with #EXTM3U, and every channel or video has an #EXTINF line with its name and attributes, followed by the address of the stream:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-name="News HD" tvg-logo="https://example.com/news.png" group-title="News",News HD
https://stream.example.com/live/news.m3u8

Your IPTV provider hosts this playlist and gives you its address — the M3U link or M3U URL. The link often contains your username and password, so treat it like a login.

M3U vs M3U8

"M3U8" has two meanings. A playlist saved in UTF-8 encoding is often called M3U8, and it is added exactly like any M3U link. In streaming, .m3u8 is also the format of HLS streams — the format Apple devices play natively — and many channels inside IPTV playlists are HLS streams.

  1. Install Smart IPTV Pro Player from the App Store. It requires iOS 18.0 or later.
  2. Copy the M3U link from your provider's email or customer area. Copy the whole address, including http:// or https:// and everything after ?.
  3. On the Add Your Playlist screen (or Add Playlist in Settings), choose M3U as the Connection Type.
  4. Paste the link into the M3U URL field and tap Add Playlist.
  5. The app checks the link and shows Playlist Added with a preview of the Top 5 Channels. Your playlist is now in Live TV, Movies and Series.

What the player reads from your playlist

  • Channel names from tvg-name or the title after the comma.
  • Logos from tvg-logo.
  • Categories from group-title. Entries without a group are listed under Other.
  • Live TV, Movies or Series: the app sorts entries into these tabs using the group names your provider uses. If your provider also offers an Xtream Codes login, that method delivers movies and series as structured lists with seasons and episodes — see M3U vs Xtream Codes.

Large playlists stay easy to use

M3U playlists can contain thousands of entries. Smart IPTV Pro Player keeps them manageable:

  • Separate Live TV, Movies and Series tabs with category filters.
  • Search across the whole playlist with at least three characters, with Contains or Exact title matching.
  • Favorites and History in the Library, plus downloads of movies and episodes for offline viewing.
  • Several playlists side by side, with automatic refresh every 4, 12 or 24 hours.
  • Incomplete link: copy it again in full — many links are cut off at & or ?.
  • Expired subscription or connection limit: check your account with your provider and stop playback on other devices.
  • Channels buffer: follow the steps in fixing IPTV buffering on iPhone.

Only play playlists you're allowed to use

Smart IPTV Pro Player doesn't include, sell or recommend playlists or channels. Use M3U links from services that hold the rights to their content in your country — read Is IPTV legal? for the details.

Frequently asked questions

Can Smart IPTV Pro Player open M3U8 playlists?

Yes. A playlist link ending in .m3u8 is usually an M3U playlist saved in UTF-8 and is added exactly like any M3U URL. Individual channels inside a playlist are often HLS (.m3u8) streams, which the player plays natively.

Can I import an .m3u file from the Files app?

No. Smart IPTV Pro Player adds playlists by URL only. If you only have a file, ask your IPTV provider for the playlist link.

Does the app include M3U playlists or channels?

No. Smart IPTV Pro Player is a player only. You need an M3U link from an IPTV service you are authorized to use.

Can I add more than one M3U playlist?

Yes. You can add several playlists, switch between them and delete them in Settings.

Does the playlist update when my provider changes channels?

Yes. Playlists refresh automatically on launch every 4, 12 or 24 hours (12 hours by default), and you can tap Refresh Playlist at any time.
